Myanmar is one of the few remaining global travel destinations where visitors can obtain a genuine cultural experience. Unique characteristics of Myanmar include the harmonious fusion of nat worship with the country’s national religion – Theravada Buddhism. Additionally, Myanmar features a Burmese majority population. However, the country is culturally diverse with fiercely independent minority groups such as the Shan, Karen, Mon, Kachin and Arakan. Unfortunately, the country has experienced armed insurrection since gaining independence from British colonial rule. Nonetheless, travel in most sections of Myanmar is safe for foreigners.
