Namib Desert

Namib Desert Photos and Facts

The Namibia coastal fog is a natural phenomenon that is the result of the Belguela current flowing up the Namibia coastline. This cold water current flows up from Antarctica and creates a weather inversion on the coast of Namibia. As a result, it creates a coastal fog that then flows over the extreme Namib desert environment.

Please see all of my Namib Naukluft National Park photos from Namibia which display the profound effects of the coastal fog. Unique wildlife and plants such as the Welwitschia would not exist if not for the Namibia coastal fog.

Rainfall is very scarce in certain sections of the Namib Desert. In some areas it has not rained for over 20 years. Therefore, this Namibia coastal fog provides a much needed water source for plants, insects and animals that live in this extreme environment. Please observe this extreme natural environment seen in the Namib Desert photos that are included in my Namibia travel posts listed below.
