Khmer Rouge

Khmer Rouge Facts and History

The surrender and hasty evacuation of the United States at the end of the Vietnam War created a power vacuum in SE Asia. In Cambodia, this resulted in the collapse of the royalist regime that had been propped up by the US military. The royalist regime was quickly overthrown by an extremist organization known as the “Khmer Rouge”.

Policy implementation of the new regime resulted in widespread famine. The result was the death of an unknown number of civilians. Additionally, the Khmer Rouge used exceptionally brutal tactics to subdue political dissidents. Political “dissident” was a very broad term that included anyone who was educated. The actual number of people killed is unknown, however the figure is in the millions.

The Khmer Rouge enforced their policies by implementing a broad network of concentration camps throughout Cambodia. This network of concentration camps was known as the “killing fields”.

Photos and facts about the Tuol Sleng, Choeung Ek and the Phnom Sampeau Khmer Rouge facilities plus the other lasting effects of the Khmer Rouge can be found in my travel posts below.
