Cape Fur Seal Photos and Info

The cape fur seal habitat ranges from the Cape Cross Seal Reserve in Namibia to the Eastern Cape in South Africa. There are over 200,000 resident cape fur seals at Cape Cross Namibia. I have posted a large collection of cape fur seal photos.

Additionally, I had several encounters with the cape fur seal in South Africa and that information is also available below, including cape fur seal photos and information about their local characteristics.

The stamina of the cape fur seal is exceptional and they have been spotted as far as 170 kilometers offshore. The males can reach 660 pounds and grow to 7 feet in length. The males are very territorial and they can amass as many as 60-70 cows during mating season.

Great white sharks are the main predator in South Africa and Namibia. However, seal harvesting in Namibia is still practiced at Cape Cross. The seals are harvested for their fur, oils from their fat and to protect the local fishing industry. Additionally, the male genitalia of cape fur seals can be sold as an aphrodisiac in Asia
