The banyan tree is ubiquitous in southern Asia and there are many different varieties. However, its most unique characteristic is it’s ability to swallow large objects such as other trees, bridges and even entire buildings.
The banyan tree is actually a species of fig that originated in India. This would explain why the banyan is found throughout Asia. However, the banyan tree is also found in Madagascar. The reason for this may lie in the fact that 1oo million years ago Madagascar and India were joined by geologic processes. Or perhaps someone transplanted the banyan tree in Madagascar long ago. I encountered many banyan trees while traveling in southern Madagascar in Tsimanampetsotsa Nature Reserve. I have included a collection of those banyan tree photos here.
